Clear Air Zones

Transport for London is instigating an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in the central London from April 2019. You can check whether your vehicle is compliant here.

The ULEZ will be extended across more of the capital in 2021.

In addition the government has so far mandated three UK cities to implement Clean Air Zones (CAZ) by 2020. These are Leeds, Southampton and Birmingham.  Birmingham has set its daily charge for non-compliant vehicles at £50 a day.

In a surprise announcement on Jan 10, Southampton has also said it does not now want a chargeable clean air zone

Plans for a Clean Air Zones in Nottingham and Derby have been scrapped, with councillors choosing other traffic management plans.

The Clean Air Zone in Bath was delayed after an unprecedented public response.

The government has challenged Leeds council to resubmit its plan after its request for £27m of public money to help non-compliant fleets to upgrade to Euro 6 was rejected by Defra.

What does ULEZ or CAZ mean for you?

  • Commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must be Euro-6 to enter the proscribed areas free of charge.
  • Daily charges for ULEZ will be circa £100.
  • Penalties for ULEZ non-compliance will be £1,000.
  • Charges and penalties for CAZ cities are not finalised but are likely to feature £50-£100 daily charge for non-compliant HGVs.
